At the end of the Kew Gardeners session on Sunday September 17th, sponsored by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Kew’s Director of Horticulture Richard Barley presented the prizes for the Tallest Sunflower Competition. This has been running throughout the summer as part of the Golden Jubilee Bedford Park Festival. Round 1, which ended on Green Days weekend in June, was won by 4-year-old Ena Mullarkey.
The winner of Round 2 was another young gardener, Mara Buzuleaz (above centre and left), who was aged 4 when this photo was taken and has just turned 5. Her sunflower was 2.32 metres high. The runner-up was 10-year-old Onno van Kampen Brooks (above right, with Richard Barley). Their prizes were children’s garden books from Kew (left).
